How to Apply for Visa

1. Tourist Visa (L-Visa)

Tourist visas are generally issued to applicants who intend to visit China for sightseeing, visiting family or friends.

(1) Requirements:

1. One completely filled-out Visa Application Form

2. One recently-taken passport photo,which is to be glued to the photo place in the application form.

3. A passport with at least two blank visa pages and six months validity.

(2) The following applicants may apply for multi-entry L visas:

1. Applicants born in China with a record of visits to China for at least twice in the past year. A copy of the record of visits is required.

2. Applicants who owns a property in China. A copy of the certificate of property is required.

3. Applicants born in China needs to visit China frequently for health care. A certificate given by a doctor is required.

4. Applicants whose spouse, children or parents reside in China. A copy of certificate of marriage or kindred or an invitation letter is required.

5. Applicants with a record of multi-entry L visas. A copy of the multi-entry L visas is required.

6. Other applicants who were born in China intend to visit China frequently. Necessary supporting document may be required.

2. Business Visa (F-Visa)

Business visas are generally issued to applicants who intend to take business trips to China and will stay in China for less than 6 months.

(1) Requirements:

1. One completely filled-out Visa Application Form

2. One recently-taken passport photo, which is to be glued to the photo place in the application form.

3. A passport with at least two blank visa pages and six months validity.

4. A visa notification form from Chinese Authorities or an invitation letter from the relevant Chinese governmental departments, relevant companies, business entities or non-profit governmental organizations may be required.

(2) The following applicants may apply for a multiple-entry F-visa valid for six months or 12 months, and the relevant supporting documents should also be submitted:

1. Applicants who intend to visit China frequently on business purposes need to submit a letter from his or her company and the host company in China.

2. Applicants who had a multi-entry visa need to submit a copy of the visa and the entry record.

3. Student Visa (X-Visa)

Student visas are generally issued to applicants who intend to study in China for more than 6 months.

Requirements:

1. One completely filled-out Visa Application Form

2. One recently-taken passport photo, which is to be glued to the photo place in the application form.

3. A passport with at least two blank visa pages and six months validity.

4. An original and a copy of a confirmed visa application form for international students (JW-202 or JW-201 form) issued by the Ministry of Education of China.

5. An admission notice issued by the receiving school.

6. A Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (Q-2 form) filled out, signed and stamped by a doctor. A photo of the applicant should be glued to the photo place in the form and be stamped by the doctor.

Note: Aliens holding X-visas shall, within 30 days of entry into China, obtain aliens' residence permits from the Public Security Bureau in their residing local places. Otherwise, aliens may be fined, detained or even ordered to leave the country within a specific time period.

4. Work Visa (Z-Visa)

Work Visas are generally issued to applicants who are employed to work in China for more than 6 months and who intend to do business in China.

Requirements:

1. One completely filled-out Visa Application Form

2. One recently-taken passport photo, which is to be glued to the photo place in the application form.

3. A passport with at least two blank visa pages and six months validity.

4. A visa notification form from the relevant department of the Chinese government or government-authorized companies.

5. Original and copy of Foreign Experts Working Permit issued by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, or original and copy of Alien Employment License issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, or other relevant permit of employment.

6. A Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (Q-2 form) filled out, signed and stamped by a doctor. A photo of the applicant should be glued to photo place in the form and be stamped by the doctor. Children under 16 are not required to submit the Q-2 form.

7. The spouse or children of the Z-visa applicant who accompany the applicant to stay in China are required to be listed in the above-mentioned visa notification form. Otherwise, original and copy of Marriage Certificate or Birth Certificate to prove their relationship are required.

5. Transit Visa (G-Visa)

Transit visas are generally issued to applicants who intend to transit to another country or region via China.

Requirements:

1. One completely filled-out Visa Application Form

2. One recently-taken passport photo, which is to be glued to the photo place in the application form.

3. A passport with at least two blank visa pages and six months validity.

4. A valid visa from the destination country (region) and connecting flight ticket.

Note:

1. G-visas are generally good for one or two entries.

2. Australian, New Zealand, American, Canadian, South Korean, German, French, Dutch, Luxemburg, Belgian, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Austrian, Greek, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish passports bearers do not need a Transit Visa (G Visa) if they transit via SHANGHAI and staying for less than 48 hours (going out of the airport is allowed).

6. Journalist Visa (J-1, J-2 Visa)

7. Crew visa (C- Visa):

Crew visas are issued to train attendants, air crew members and seamen, who go to China with trains, flights and liner.

Requirements:

1. One completely filled-out Visa Application Form

2. One recently-taken passport photo, which is to be glued to the photo place in the application form.

3. A passport with at least two blank visa pages and six months validity.

4. The application will be dealt in accordance with the mutual agreement. An invitation letter from the relevant department of the Chinese Government is required when there is no agreement or when the application is not within the agreement.

Note: Train attendants, air crew members and seamen to visit China for touring or a family visit should apply for a L-visa despite the validity of their C-visas.

8. Notes when applying for visa

1. The visa application form should be filled out completely and correctly.

2. The visa categories, number of entries, validity and duration of stay will be decided by the visa officials according to the laws and regulations.

3. When visas are issued, the applicants have the responsibility to check the visas and report to the officials when doubts aroused or mistakes found.

4. An applicant born in China who is applying for a Chinese visa with his or her new foreign passport is required to submit his or her Chinese passport or last foreign passport.

5. A child of a Chinese descent who was born abroad and applies for a Chinese visa for the first time is required to submit his or her birth certificate and foreign passport or a foreign permanent residence permit of his or her parents.

6. It is illegal to stay in China after the visa is expired.

9. What can you learn from the visa sticker?

1. "Enter before" (Validity of Visa) means that you may use the visa to enter China before 24:00 on the date printed on the visa. A visa is invalid and can not be extended after the date of "Enter Before" no matter it is a single entry visa, double entry visa or a multiple entry visa.

2. "Entries of Visa" means the number of entries permitted while the visa is valid. A visa comes into effect on the date of issuance and becomes invalid after the applicants used the number of entries permitted.

3. "Duration of Each Stay after Entry" means the longest period the applicants are permitted to stay in China. Duration of Each Stay is counted from the date of entry. Applicants can apply for an extension of the duration at a local Public Security Bureau if he or she stays in China longer than the number of days printed on the visa. Z, J-1, D and X visa holders need to apply for residence permits at local Public Security Bureaus no later than 30 days after their arrival in China.

10. Applicants should take responsibilities in the following cases:

      1. Visa application forms have not been completely and correctly filled out;

      2. Visas became invalid because the applicants applied for the visas more than 2 months before their entry dates.

      3. Visas are not ready before the departure dates due to the delay in visa applications;

      4. Visas become invalid because the applicants change their entry dates.

      5. Visas have not been carefully checked while being picked up and some errors are found afterwards;

      6. Applicants are refused to enter China or even to get on the planes heading for China because the validity and number of  entries are not correct;

      7. Categories and Duration of Each Stay of the visa have not been properly checked and applicants have been in China   beyond the permitted period.
