The earthquake death toll across China rose to 19509 on May 15, 2008, China's official Xinhua News Agency learnt from authoritative sources. The number could rise to over 50,000, says the authorities. In the most severely damaged Sichuan province, there had been 14463 confirmed deaths, 1405 missing, 25788 still under the debris, 64746 injured. 20 million people in the region are directly affected by the quake. The Chinese government, army and police officers, NGOs and volunteers are doing their utmost on rescue and relief missions. Many Danes as well as Chinese nationals have contacted the Embassy for donations. The quake-hit areas, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are in urgent need of tents, blankets, stretchers, wheelchairs, medicine, medical equipments, rescue equipments, compressed food and drinking water. As the transport to the epicenter has not yet resumed, the most effective assistance at this moment would be sending funds.
