Speech by Charge d' affaires Mr. Gu Hui at the Spring Festival Jazz Concert
2012/01/30

28th January, 2012

Dear friends, Ladies and gentlemen, Good evening!

Tonight, we have created a joyful atmosphere for the celebration of the Chinese Spring Festival! According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, we stepped into the Year of Dragon on the 23rd of Jan. Like Christmas to the Danes, the Spring Festival is the most important holiday for the Chinese. But unlike in Denmark or in the west, the dragon in Chinese culture is not evil, not aggressive, and not horrible at all. It is not even an animal. It is a fictitious creature that can fly to the sky, swim in the sea and master the land. It is a symbol of dynamic, power, and success.

So, allow me on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Denmark, to extend the warmest greetings and best wishes to all of you! May you all have a joyful and successful Dragon year!

2011 has been an eventful year in the world. China kept on its course of opening up and reform, and meanwhile was actively engaged in international cooperation to address global issues. In 2012, China will continue to carry out the 12th Five Year Plan and accelerate the sustainable scientific development. China is committed to the road of peaceful development and friendly cooperation with all the countries on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence.

The year of 2011 witnessed that the Sino-Danish relations has been developing steadily, thanks to joint efforts of both governments and peoples. The year 2012 is essential for Europe to overcome the crisis and energize the economy, and Denmark is now shouldering its responsibilities as the rotating presidency of the EU. I believe, as long as we strengthen cooperation and make joint efforts hand-in-hand, the Year of Dragon will bring us into a brighter future.

Dear friends,

In cooperation with different partners, the Chinese Embassy in Denmark has hosted Spring Festival Performance in Denmark for 11 years, which not only enrich the local cultural life, but also promote cultural exchanges and understandings between our two peoples. This year we again have the pleasure of having The Danish Culture Institute as our partner. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank The Danish Culture Institute and especially to its Secretary General Mr. Finn Andersen.

Tonight, we are so lucky to have the Shanghai Jazz Big Band with us. They will present the concert for us, with beautiful Chinese songs in jazz style.

Ladies and Gentlemen, enjoy the concert and happy Chinese New Year!

Thank you!
