Remarks of Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Denmark on Joseph Wu's Article Published by Danish Media

On September 6, Joseph Wu, head of the Taiwan authorities' foreign relations department, published an article openly advocating "Taiwan joining the United Nations". It is a flagrant provocation to the One China Principle, a basic principle recognized by the international community. It is also a blatant propaganda of "Taiwan independence" and a vain attempt to split China. The purpose of such an article is to deceive people around the world and mislead the international community with lies and fallacies.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and this is an unchangeable fact. In 1945, the Chinese people won victory in the war of resistance against Fascism. Taiwan was thus recovered and returned to China. A series of international law documents, including the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Declaration, have clearly and unmistakably confirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan. Although the two sides across the Taiwan Strait have yet to be reunified, the sovereignty and territory of China has never been severed and the fact that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one and same China has never changed since 1949.

The United Nations is an international organization composed of sovereign states. The Resolution 2758 of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) clearly recognized that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. There is but one China in the world. The Taiwan region is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. There is no such issue of Taiwan joining the United Nations. Adherence to the One China Principle is a common understanding of the international community and a basic norm governing international relations. It is also a fundamental political premise of China's development of bilateral relations with more than 180 countries in the world. The participation of China's Taiwan region in activities of international organizations, including the WHO, must be handled in accordance with the "One China Principle".

We warn the Taiwan authorities and people like Joseph Wu that their advocacy of "Taiwan joining the United Nations" will never win the support of the international community and is doomed to yet another failure. The reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Straits is an unstoppable trend, while the so-called "Taiwan Independence" is a dead end which will only bring disaster to the people of Taiwan.
