Remarks of Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Denmark on Danish Foreign Minister's Comments on China's Decision on the Qualification of LegCo Members of HKSAR
2020/11/14

Q: On November 12, Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod retweeted the declaration by EU High Representative regarding China's decision on the qualification of members of the Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the disqualification of four LegCo members, which claimed that "Freedom of expression, democracy, right to peacefully voice differences of opinion must be protected". What's your comment?

A: The question of qualification of the HKSAR LegCo members is purely an internal affair of China, and other countries have no right to interfere or make irresponsible remarks.

Reflecting the principle of rule of law, the decision made by the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress on the qualification of LegCo members is in the fundamental interests of all the Chinese people including the HKSAR citizens, as it is conducive to safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development, to maintaining long-term stability and prosperity of the HKSAR, and to sustaining normal operation of Hong Kong's governing agencies. We firmly support the decision made by HKSAR government on the disqualification of the four LegCo members.

LegCo members must uphold the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and pledge loyalty to the HKSAR. No country will turn a blind eye to violation of oath or betrayal by government officials and lawmakers.

We urge the Danish side to abide by international law and the basic norms of international relations and to stop any forms of interference in China's internal affairs, including Hong Kong affairs.
